The boyfriend of a Playboy model has appeared in court charged with the murder of a Californian doctor.
Jon Kennison stood shackled in a Las Vegas Courtroom in the first hearing of a trial that has the 27-year-old accused of murdering Dr Thomas Burchard.
Kennison, who also faces a charge of conspiracy to commit murder, is being held without bail in the Clark County Detention Centre alongside girlfriend Kelsey Nichole Turner, 25, a former Playboy model.
Diana Pena, 30, is also a suspect in the killing of Dr Burchard, 71, who was a resident of Salina, California.
Kennison held a piece paper that read ‘Love U lil Mama’ during his court appearance on Friday morning.
It was not immediately clear who the note referred to.
Neither chief deputy district attorney Pam Weckerly nor deputy public defender Ryan Bashor offered details of Kennison’s arrest, aside to say that he was captured in Las Vegas this week.
Police believe the three suspects abandoned the Las Vegas home they were sharing and fled the state following the death, Las Vegas Review Journal reported.
Dr Burchard was found bludgeoned to death in early March.
His body was rotting in the boot of Turner’s two-door Mercedes-Benz on a dirt road outside Las Vegas.
The psychiatrist had paid the rent for the trio’s home through March having previously financed Turner when she lived in California.
Investigators found blood throughout a bedroom in the Las Vegas home and said there was evidence of attempts to try and clean it up.
Following her arrest last month Turner was expected to face murder and conspiracy charges on April 16, but the court appearance was delayed.
Pena was taken into custody on Saturday after turning herself into police.
Dr Burchard lived off Highway 68 in Salinas and worked for decades in the Montage Health behavioral health program with the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
According to Dr Burchard’s longtime girlfriend Judy Earp, the psychiatrist had given Turner $300,000.
