CHILDREN have been left stranded 170ft in the air for THREE hours after a New Year’s Eve fairground ride broke down as firefighters continue to battle to rescue them.
A terrified group of six adults and two minors have now been stuck in the basket of a carousal since 8.30pm after sparks reportedly started flying from the ride in Brittany’s capital Rennes this evening.
Shortly after 11pm local time, a helicopter was seen flying in to rescue the trapped group as fears mounted over their safety.
Earlier it was reported they were having to abseil down 20 metres so they could reach the fire crews.
Chilling video footage from the scene showed their legs could dangling as they waited, suspended at the pinnacle of the fair ride.
According to witnesses, the carousel broke down at around 8.30pm when sparks flew out of the middle engine, Ouest France reports.
Fire crews were ascending the enormous ride for a rescue mission, but a chopper was needed to complete the operation.
Their equipment only allows them to reach 100ft, meaning those stuck reportedly had to abseil 72ft just to get to them.
The entire operation was initially due to take two hours, but the victims were still stuck at the top of the ride nearly three and a half hours after the ride first broke down.
Dramatic footage from fair-goers shows fair-goers looking on anxiously as crews scale the arm of the ride, as the rest of the fair continues to be open.
Earlier this evening, journalist Samuel Nohra tweeted: “The Firefighters will go up to 52m and then make the 8 people abseiling including two children stranded. They are well and have to be patient”.
Shortly before midnight local time, he tweeted a video of a helicopter approaching the ride, writing: “The #civil security helicopter arrives at the carnival to rescue the people trapped in the merry-go-round”.
