Kane urges England fans to get behind Rooney
Rooney is due to play for a few minutes at the end of next Thursday’s friendly against the USA at Wembley, and captain Kane said: “We spoke previously about doing something for the players who have amazing milestones, amazing international careers — me and the gaffer and a couple of players.
“I didn’t know it was going to be this week but I knew it was an idea Gareth wanted to do. I think it’s great.”
Kane, who will happily hand over the armband when the Three Lions’ record-scorer comes on to win his 120th cap, added: “He deserves it. He was a great captain for us.
“He was the captain when I first got into the squad. If he plays, of course he’ll be the captain.”
The FA have been insistent that 33-year-old Rooney, now playing in the USA for Major League Soccer’s DC United, will not be made skipper ahead of Kane for the night.
Tottenham striker Kane added: “Wayne was an amazing player for us, one of our greatest-ever players and it’s a shame that his international career kind of just stopped. So it will be nice to see him again and train with him again.
“I don’t know how long he is going to play for next Thursday but it will be good to see him back out there.”
