A female prison officer appeared in court today charged over an alleged relationship with an inmate.
Stacey Sutherland, 27, of Barnard Castle, Co Durham stands accused over her conduct at the town’s HMP Deerbolt Young Offenders Institution, where prisoners are aged 18-21.
It was alleged that between April 1 and May 14 this year, she misconducted herself ‘in a way which amounted to an abuse of the public’s trust in the office holder by entering into a relationship with a serving prisoner’ contrary to common law.
Appearing at at Newton Aycliffe magistrates court in Co Durham, Sutherland spoke only to confirm her name, age and address in Marshall Street, Barnard Castle.
District Judge Tim Capstick told her that the charge was so serious that it had to be dealt with at crown court.
She is due to appear before Teesside crown court on December 6.
Judge Capstick warned that not turning up at court was a separate offence for which she could be arrested and detained. She was granted unconditional bail.
