Gary Neville fumes at Paul Pogba’s Man Utd penalty miss after Marcus Rashford debate

Sport & Transfer News

Gary Neville has admitted he was fuming when he saw Paul Pogba’s penalty miss against Wolves .

Midfielder Pogba was fouled by Conor Coady before stepping back up to take the spot kick – which he powered straight at keeper Rui Patricio.

It was the fourth penalty Pogba has missed in the last year, as the Red Devils suffered a 1-1 draw with Wolves at Molineux.

Strangely, Marcus Rashford scored a penalty in the season opener against Chelsea last week and was still on the pitch when the kick was taken.

Cameras before both the penalty against the Blues and Wolves spotted Pogba and Rashford discussing who should be taking the kick.

And United legend Neville admits he was baffled about the decision over the kick-taker and suggested a lack of leadership on the pitch led to the confusion.

Rui Patricio saves the penalty

“Before the penalty I was fuming,” Neville said on Sky Sports.

“A couple of years ago when Mirallas took one off Baines I called it a despicable act. It is treachery in football terms to take a penalty off a teammate.

“However we have looked back on the penalty last week when Rashford took one against Chelsea and Pogba walked up to Rashford and they had a long chat.

“I’m not sure if Pogba should have taken the one last week and Rashford stole that.

“They had a long chat again today. I don’t like it, why is there a long debate over who is taking it? There should never be a debate.

Pogba reacts to his penalty miss

“Pogba has missed four of them over the last 12 months, so you would think he has had his chance.

“Rashford scored last week…take the penalty! There wasn’t a leader out on the pitch. They couldn’t make a decision between them.

“Something wasn’t right.

“Initially I was fuming at Pogba as I thought typically you, you selfish, why are you trying to take a penalty off a player but I’m holding off on it.”
