The 2018/19 season kicks off with a bang with the mammoth clash between defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday afternoon.

The two sides have already had an opportunity to size one another up as they met in a pre-season friendly last month, but the atmosphere is bound to be entirely different in the nation’s capital as this particular encounter will be as competitive as they come.

Team News

Giving an extra edge to the clash is the fact that a player who’s been key to the host’s fortunes in recent years, Khama Billiat, will be turning out in the opposite camp after departing the Chloorkop-based outfit on a free transfer in the off-season.

The Zimbabwean international, along with stalwart Siphiwe Tshabalala, was an injury doubt earlier in the week, but both players have since been given an all-clear and should play a massive role in the all-important fixture.

Apart from Billiat, Sundowns will be missing another key player in last season’s PSL Footballer of the Year Percy Tau, who recently signed for English Premiership outfit, Brighton and Hove Albion.

However, the Brazilians have had some time to acclimatise to life without the star forward and looked to be well on the road towards hitting their stride in their last competitive fixture when they took on AS Togo-Port in the CAF Champions League.

Mamelodi Sundowns vs Kaizer Chiefs: Head to head

All but one of the last five league fixtures between these two sides have produced a result, the odd one being the most recent – which ended goalless at FNB Stadium. In this period, both sides have won an equal amount of games.

Kaizer Chiefs emerged victorious in the corresponding fixture, as they stunned the hosts in winning 2-1.

Kick off: 14:55 (SAST).

TV and live stream: The match will be broadcast live on Supersport 4 and SABC 1.
