An American comedian called Jess Hilarious has been forced to apologise after being branded racist comments about four Sikh men she filmed an airplane after their presence made her feel ‘threatened’.
The 27-year-old Instagram star (real name Jessica Moore) came under fire when a video surfaced on Saturday showing her filming four men wearing turbans boarding a plane and commenting via Instagram Stories.
She launched into a foul mouthed rant about the gentlemen, asking: “Where are they going? Where are they going?”
Following criticism of her post, she raged: “If I’m scared, I’m scared. F*** y’all. F*** how y’all feel. Y’all mad at me because I don’t side with every other black person. Because I don’t side with every other race—f*** y’all.”
She went on: “I feel how I feel, I felt threatened, and that was it. And I’m not flying there. We were evacuated, b****! Why? Why, with no reason explained at all, no technical difficulties or nothing. Y’all gon’ listen to Jess with the mess one day, because my news is real.”
After boarding again, she continued: “So, how ironic is it that we boarded the same plane and I don’t see those people.”
Jess’s comments sparked a furious backlash – with many branding her “racist”, “xenophobic.”
As a result, she took to social media again on Monday to offer an apology in a lengthy statement.
“In my previous post, I was defensive, but that’s what happens when you don’t take the time to really know what’s transpiring,” she began.
“In understanding the error of my actions, I have to first acknowledge the rooted issues, which means racially profiling a group of individuals based on their appearance and on top of that—publicizing it on a platform where others can be hurt by it and others were hurt from it,” she continued.
“I’m not sure if these particular individuals that were on the plane are aware of my actions by now, but either way, I would love to apologize personally to them first for my insensitive and ignorant behavior,” she went on.
“Yet, I would still like to apologize to all of you who were aware and offended by my actions,” she added.
She also highlighted that she had not had the men kicked of the plane – contrary to what some outlets suggested.
