However, instead the club recalled club legend Zidane, who won four consecutive Champions League trophies while in the hot seat at Real.

Speaking to Marca, Mourinho, who won a league title and Copa del Rey with Real in his three seasons in Madrid, insisted he is not disappointed after being snubbed.

Mourinho said: “I think it’s perfect with the fantastic things he’s done in recent years, it’s perfect for me, perfect for Madrid, perfect for him.

“It’s a great opportunity to show how good he is, especially now with a new project, I think it’s great, that everything goes very well.

“I never said that I liked it or that I did not like it, I tell you that it is perfect, for me it is perfect.”

It was widely reported Mourinho, who was sacked by Manchester United in December, would be handed a deal to return to Spain.

However, with the ex-Chelsea boss desperate to return to management, it seems “The Special One” will turn his attention to Ligue One champions PSG.

Thomas Tuchel could be sacked at the end of the season after his side were knocked out of the Champions League against United in the last 16 stage.

The French giants have a history of sacking managers who fail to deliver in the Europe with Unai Emery and Laurent Blanc the two previous names on the receiving end of the chop.

Mourinho was in the stands to watch Lille earlier this year and openly admitted that managing in France could be a possibility.

He said: “I can imagine myself as a coach in Ligue 1, I am a man who has worked in four different countries, I like to know and learn other cultures. Working in a new championship would be a fantastic experience.

“For now I’m calm, I try to live better with my family and friends and I work to get the right opportunity to go back to training.

“Two to three months [without a job] is okay, afterwards it’s more difficult. I hope to have the opportunity to come back stronger.

“My project is my project as a person and coach, to improve myself, to be better, to think all days about my profession, which is also a passion. But this is not the time to talk with clubs.”
