Timo Werner will not sign a new contract at RB Leipzig – and that has pricked the ears of Jurgen Klopp.
The Liverpool manager is a big fan of the 14-goal striker, but so are Bayern Munich.
Werner, 23, is considered to be one of the biggest talents in German football.
But he won’t be staying with the Bundesliga club for much longer.
“It’s well known that we want to extend with him, but he’s signalled to us that he does not want to sign a new contract,” chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff told Sky Sports .
“We need to see what’s right for us and for Timo.”
That’s big news for Liverpool – and a bid of £35million may be enough to do a deal this summer before his deal expires in 2020.
Liverpool need another attacker with worries growing about a Plan B if one of their three forwards picks up an injury.
But they may be reluctant to do business again with RB Leipzig following the protracted saga for the signing of Naby Keita – a deal which took much longer than expected to complete.
Any deal would surely spell the end for Daniel Sturridge at Liverpool.
He could be reuniting with his old manager Brendan Rodgers at Leicester ?
The Sun say a deal could be happening in June with the England striker out of contract this summer.
“It is difficult of course when you have someone of a top level to then bring in someone of that top level,” the former Reds boss said in midweek.
“One, because they are hard to find and, two, because they want to play.
“I always think it is about two things, affordability and availability. The club will look and see where we are at the end of the season.”
Liverpool moved back on top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday.
The now head to Porto for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final and take a 2-0 advantage to Portugal.
