Luapula woman throws own baby into fire over relish

Police in Mwansabombwe in Luapula Province have arrested a mother who threw her two-year-old daughter into a fire.

This was after the toddler, who has sustained severe burns on both legs was found eating relish from a pot. The mother, identified as 21-year-old Esther Mumba, reportedly flew into a rage and beat up her child before throwing her into a fire.

Deputy Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga disclosed in a statement today that the baby was rescued by her grandfather who later reported the matter to police.

“Police in Mwansabombwe received a report of Assault on a Child in which Rodgers Mutale aged 60 of Kasumpa village in Mwansabombwe District reported that female juvenile aged two years of the same village was thrown into the fire by her biological mother, Esther Mumba aged 21. She sustained severe burns on both legs. Facts of the report are that, on March 11, 2019 around 16:00 hours at the above village the named suspect found her child eating relish from the pot. She became upset, beat her up and threw her into the fire outside the house. Fortunately, the baby was rescued by her grandfather,” stated Hamoonga.

He further stated that the suspect who is in police custody will appear in court soon.
