Manchester United fans have reacted with fury to news Ed Woodward looks set to remain in charge of transfers this summer.
United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was expected to appoint a sporting or technical director this summer.
But it seems he has failed to identify a No1 target for the role .
And that means Woodward is now leading transfer plans, in a decision that has frustrated and infuriated Red Devils fans.
Woodward vetoed a series of Jose Mourinho transfer targets last summer and that proved to be the beginning of the end for the Portuguese boss.
And that looks unlikely to change without a sporting director overseeing recruitment and development.
Fans have been quick to vent their displeasure, with Siddesh K Ider saying: “No technical director for MUFC this summer. Ed Woodward in charge of transfers. Hope it doesn’t end up the way it has done in the past. Shambles.”
Another predicted United would miss out on top defensive target Matthijs de Ligt with Woodward at the helm, while the executive vice-chairman also took some flak for United’s apparent willingness to listen to offers for striker Romelu Lukaku, who scored twice for Belgium against Scotland on Tuesday night.
Red Devils United said if the executive vice-chairman couldn’t decide on a sporting director, fans wouldn’t feel confident he would act decisively in the transfer market. And Petani Jenkins said the time had come for Woodward to leave the club.
He added: “It needs to be across the club, with younger players and the foundations, all the way through.”
Ferdinand has been sounded out about a role at Old Trafford but said: “It all depends on the shape of the job.”
