The crash is being investigated after the car had failed to stop for officers on the M25 shortly before 10pm.

An Essex Police spokesperson said: “It followed a police pursuit involving one of the cars, which officers from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire road policing unit had attempted to stop on the M25.”

‘IT’S TERRIBLY TRAGIC, VERY, VERY SAD’

Horrified witnesses said a man in one of the cars shouted “don’t go” to an injured woman.

Margaret Parrot told BBC Essex: “It’s terribly tragic, very, very sad.”

Essex Police said the collision took place after a police chase involving one of the cars, which officers had been attempting to stop on the M25.

The woman died at the scene and the crash has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

Officers from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire road policing unit had attempted to stop the car on the motorway.

The scene of the deadly crash will remain closed for some time, the force added.

It is not known how many other people have been injured or if the woman was in the car being pursued by officers.

A statement from the force said: “The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct as it followed a police pursuit involving one of the cars, which officers from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire road policing unit had attempted to stop on the M25.”

Essex Police has asked for witnesses and drivers with dash cam footage to contact them.
