Sports Minister Moses Mawere

Government says it has revised the school curriculum were physical education will now be compulsory as a way of promoting sports in the country.

Minister of Youth, Sport and Child Development, Moses Mawere has disclosed that physical education will now be compulsory and examinable in the revised curriculum as part of the grassroots program in which Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), Ministry of Sport and Ministry of Education aims at developing young talent from the school system.

In December last year, the three institutions had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at supporting football at the lowest level for both boys and girls.

Mr. Mawere told media in an interview that the grassroots program is targeting all schools across the country where each school will be required to come up with sports facilities and at an appropriate time, FAZ will continue supporting them with football equipment.

He explained that his ministry through a programme called Community Sports Facilities which started in 2016, will be giving out sports kits in selected communities across the country using the provincial sports coordinators and parliamentarians.

And Mr. Mawere has pledged to address the accommodation challenges for FAZ officers who have been placed in different districts adding that, the officers will be accommodated under his ministry’s provincial offices.
