Kaizer Chiefs trophy drought continues, thanks to a last-gasp penalty from Zakhele Lepasa which gave TS Galaxy as shock win in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday.

The two sides went into the all-too-crucial clash at Moses Mabhida Stadium with the Soweto giants overwhelming favourites against a side that had plodded along to an eighth-placed finish in the National First Division.

Amakhosi had had a nightmarish league campaign of their own, going without a win in their last seven matches to finish ninth, missing out on participation in next season’s MTN 8.

However, with a partisan Durban crowd sporting a sea of gold, and an impressive record in Nedbank Cup finals, Ernst Middendorp’s men were expected to overcome their league form and sweeten what has been, otherwise, a sour season.

TS Galaxy make Nedbank Cup history

A goalless first half with very little goalmoth action from either side went by, but Chiefs came all guns blazing in the second 45 with The Rockets living off scraps.

It would turn out that the unfancied minnows only needed a sniff, as a rare surge into opposition territory with just two minutes remaining saw them awarded a penalty after Zakhele Lepasa was fouled in the box.

The 22-year-old, on loan from Chiefs’ bitter rivals Orlando Pirates, stepped up to take the spot kick, sending Bruce Bvuma the wrong way to take Galaxy within touching distance of history.

It was his fourth goal of the competition, making him its leading goal scorer and giving his side the distinction of becoming the first lower league side to win the Nedbank Cup.
