A 40-year-old woman has been charged with the murder of a three-month-old baby girl. 

The woman, from West Croydon, had been arrested earlier today on suspicion of the murder. 

Police were called by London Ambulance Service just before midday on Saturday, to a report of a baby unresponsive at a home in south London.

The baby was taken to hospital but she was pronounced dead at around 1pm. Her family have been informed.

A post-mortem examination will take place in due course. Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this investigation. 

The baby and the woman charged were known to each other, the Metropolitan Police confirmed today.

A spokesman for the force said: ‘At this early stage, police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this investigation. The baby and the woman arrested were known to each other.

‘The investigation is being managed by the Met’s Homicide and Major Crime Command led by DCI Noel McHugh. Enquiries continue to establish the full circumstances.’   

The woman will appear at Bromley Magistrates Court on March 4.
