A man has been arrested after his ex-girlfriend realised he was living in the attic of her house – because the toilet seat was left up.
The woman, who has not been named, had noticed strange signs around the house she shares with her daughter in Pittsburgh, USA.
At first she didn’t call police, but eventually put the pieces together when she noticed objects had moved.
She told TV station WPXI: “But I can’t call the police and say, ‘There’s a blanket in my basement’.”
On one Saturday morning she went upstairs to her bedroom after hearing a noise she believed was caused by her cat.
She says she was stunned to find Cary Cocuzzi, 31, standing there.
He grabbed her by the face but she managed to break free and ran outside to call for help from neighbors who called 911, she told WPXI.
Police searched the house and found Cocuzzi hiding.
They said he told officers he was homeless and had been sneaking in and out of the house for about two weeks.
The woman had already obtained a protective order prohibiting Cocuzzi from coming near her.
She told the TV station that she is grateful her daughters weren’t home during the confrontation – and that she wished she had acted on her instincts that something was wrong.
“I had an intuition about it but I ignored it, I brushed it aside. I didn’t want to seem paranoid, but I should have trusted my instincts because I was right,” the woman said.
Cocuzzi now faces burglary charges.
